More than 3,400 individuals and families in the greater Danbury community have benefited from a drive-thru food distribution that takes place on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm at Danbury High School. More than 128,000 pounds of food have been distributed on Saturdays in August, September, and October 2021.
The distributions are a partnership between the United Way of Western Connecticut, Connecticut Foodshare, the City of Danbury, Danbury Public Schools, and Walnut Hill Community Pantry.
"Seeing the gratitude on the faces of the people who receive this food is very rewarding," said Isabel Almeida, President of United Way of Western Connecticut. "Many people continue to struggle in our region, despite working hard. Elder care workers, housecleaners, and seniors are among those coming to pick up food. We can't thank the city, the schools, Walnut Hill, and Connecticut Foodshare enough for coming together to make this happen."
Your donations to United Way of Western Connecticut support food security work like this. It helps us get fresh, healthy food to low-income workers and seniors who have trouble paying for groceries after paying their rent, utility, and transportation costs.
More than 50% of hardworking ALICE families have indicated that purchasing healthy food can be a challenge for them. United Way of Western Connecticut works to improve access to healthy food, so everyone has the nutrition they need to live a fulfilling life.
